First United Church | An inclusive Christian community in Bloomington, Indiana Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?

Joining First United Church was an easy decision for us! We found an openness for and an acceptance of all types of Christians with a wide range of beliefs and opinions. The Faith/Life class for young adults was and still is a major draw for us; together we encounter God by reading Biblical passages, sharing our own stories, and discussing God's movement within our lives.

The sermons are engaging, challenging, and fun, and the quality of the music during the service is excellent. In addition, our son enjoys seeing his friends in the nursery each week. We feel very much at home in this church.

First United Church SteepleIS FIRST UNITED CHURCH RIGHT FOR YOU?  COME AND SEE!

You can read through all the stuff on this web site until you are blue in the face but the only way you can really know if we are the church for you is to come visit us one of these Sundays. We love visitors and we try to help them feel as comfortable as possible, but we know that walking into a strange church the first time can be daunting. Here are a few tips as you consider a first visit.

  • How to Get Here? Where to Park? If you are visiting for the first time, it would be best to get onto Third Street and turn south on Woodscrest Avenue, then take your first right -- the church is right in front of you. Park anywhere, go in any door. Sunday School starts at 9:30 and worship, for some strange reason, starts at 10:45.
  • Got Kids?  We have excellent child care facilities serviced by caring and carefully selected adults. Kids Worship, a worship experience just for kids, meets at 9:30 to 10:30 on Sundays. During worship, the kids are invited up to the front for a special story with the pastors and then allowed to leave the Sanctuary to go to Children's Learning Time (Like Sunday School).
  • What to Wear?   Some of our members still dress up, but increasingly we are a casual bunch. Wear anything you like -- well, shoes and shirt of course!
  • What is Our Service Like?  Fairly traditional but with a lot of interaction, proclamation, and praise. We are here to be in the presence of God and discover God's call in our lives. You will get a bulletin so you can easily follow the order of worship. The highlight of the service is a sermon by one of our gifted pastors. A collection is taken during the service but don't worry about it! You are not expected to put anything in if you are just scoping us out.
  • How Will We Treat You?  If you come in by the main sanctuary entrance, you will be greeted and cordially welcomed by church members. We will not ask nosey questions or have you stand up or anything like that. We do appreciate it if you sign in on one of the sign-in sheets located in the pews. Give us as much or as little information as you please. If you leave an address we may send you a bag of cookies!
  • Got Theology?  We are not very "creedal," so nobody will cross-examine you about your beliefs. We take our Bible seriously but not literally. We are a Christ-centered church and, in the spirit of Jesus, we welcome everyone -- no exceptions -- into fellowship.  If you want more information about our theology, click here.
  • Want to Get Involved? If you are interested in joining the church, speak with our pastor. If you want to just attend without joining, no problem. And, you are welcome at any time to participate in our missions and community outreach programs. These include PARTNERS, Op House, Community Kitchen, Monroe County United Ministries, and many others.
